An Evaluation on Operability and Maneuverability of Small Coastal Fishing Vessel Using Simulation and AIS Data

This paper presents the hydrodynamics performance of traditional small fishing vessel with the capacity of 3 GT operated in the coastal area of Surabaya. Regarding with the new Indonesian regulation, the small vessels of less than 5 GT are eligible to achieve the fishing area of up to 12 nm from the shore line which is managed by the province government although the vessels are registered by the district government. Accordingly, the research is required in order to evaluate the operability and maneuverability performance of the small vessels. Resistance and motions of the vessels is calculated and simulated in MaxSurf software, the maneuvering performance is simulated and recorded by using Mathematical Maneuvering Group model and Automatic Identification System data. The study shows that maneuverability of the vessel fulfill the IMO criteria but the operability is only 25.38%.
