Development of a simple and low-cost prototype probe fully-compatible with atmospheric solids analysis probe for the analysis of human breath in real-time

•A new probe has been developed for breath analysis.•This probe can be directly used in Waters mass spectrometry instruments.•The ionization of the compounds is based on atmospheric pressure chemical ionization.•The prototype has been successfully used in a high-resolution mass spectrometry system.•Reported compounds present in human breath and foods were detected.
