Aqueous multivalent MIBs (Zn2+, Mg2+, Al3+, Ca2+) and their energy storage mechanism are discussed from classical inorganic materials to burgeoning organic compounds, and corresponding strategies to tackle these issues are summarized from the bulk phase of electrode and interface with electrolyte.
