The applications of porous carbons for environment remediation are summarized by dividing into them adsorption, gas separation, capacitive deionization, electromagnetic interference shielding, and sensing. The section on adsorption includes adsorptive removal of environment pollutants (inorganic and organic species), water vapor adsorption, CO2 capture, metal ions trapping, and oil sorption. The section on sensing is explained by dividing the sensors into chemical sensors, strain sensors, and biosensors. For most of these applications, surface functional groups in the porous carbons play important roles, as do the pore structures.
