Trends in biofiltration applied to remove pharmaceuticals and personal care products from wastewater

Wastewaters are the result of human activities, concentrating nutrients and chemical contaminants. Pharmaceutical compounds, as antibiotics and hormones present in wastewater are a concern, being persistent, stable and difficult to remove from environmental matrices. Some compounds in contact with animal cells act disrupting the endocrine system, being considered emerging contaminants. In this context, the biofilters technologies and association of biofiltration with enzymes, focused in this chapter, has been reported as an alternative treatment of wastewater, once that present low-cost, are abundant in the natural environment, not laborious and efficient methods for pharmaceuticals and personal care products contaminants reduction in wastewater, aiming to optimize the sanitary security and their reuse.
