Preservation of the Iberian Tethys paleomargin beneath the eastern Betic mountain range

•P-wave receiver functions from a dense seismic profile across the Eastern Betics.•The Tethys Iberian paleomargin was imaged below the external zone of the mountain range.•The proximal and necking domains of paleomargin are preserved. Distal domain was involved in the subduction of Iberia.
