Multilayered chitosan/kaolin@calcium carbonate composite films with excellent chemical and thermal stabilities for oil/water filtration realized by a facile layer-by-layer assembly

•The nylon mesh with eco-friendly chitosan/kaolin@CaCO3 coating was prepared by simple route.•The coated mesh has good underwater superoleophobicity.•The mesh can remove water from various oils.•The mesh has good durability and recyclability.•The mass production of coated mesh is easily realized.
