•The flow and spray fields in a realistic staged HTR combustor were investigated.•Strong coupling between the pilot and main swirling flows has been identified.•A precessing vortex core was identified and analyzed using proper orthogonal decomposition.•Spray distribution and its correlation with the flow dynamics were illustrated.
