The influence of acid corrosion on dynamic properties and microscopic mechanism of marble

Rocks are an important building and foundation material in rock engineering, such as open-pit mining, foundation constructions, and side slope. The rock properties, including dynamic mechanical and physicochemical properties, have a critical impact on the safety and robustness of those engineering constructions. To investigate the dynamic properties of rock and the chemical corrosion effects, a series of experimental tests were conducted on white marble corroded by acid solutions with different pH values, including acid rain corrosion, split Hopkinson pressure bar, thin section identification, and scanning electron microscope tests. The results indicate that acid corrosion can destroy the binging force and microstructure among the mineral particles and form a loose structure in the specimen surface, influencing the dynamic properties and fracture characteristics. The dynamic uniaxial compression strength and elastic moduli of the rock specimen will decrease with the increase of the acid corrosion, while the specific surface energy increases gradually. The P -wave velocity and wave impedance of the corroded specimen has an overall reduction with the increase of acid corrosion, and the resultant stress in the specimen increases with the increasing pH value. Acid corrosion can change the dynamic failure of the cleavage, connection features of the crystal particles, and the characteristics of the crystal surface, and the acid corrosion specimens are easier to damage than those without acid treatment. This study provides an experimental reference for the construction and development of rock structures in acid rain regions. Article Highlights Marble specimens were corroded by an acid solution with different pH values. The microscopic structures of the corroded marble were damaged by acid corrosion. Failure of corroded rock was established based on the damage conditions of the specimen. The dynamic properties were influenced by the acid corrosion.
