•Long-term Al-exposure the excluder cultivars use the exudation of oxalic acid to Al-resistant in highbush blueberry.•The internal mechanism to Al-resistant involved the accumulation of carbohydrates, biosynthesis of organic molecules at the long-term Al-exposure in cv. Duke.•Ascorbic acid levels are increased in roots of the Al-resistant cultivars under long-term Al-exposure.•In a long-term Al-exposition, the physiological parameters are negatively affected in the star cultivar.
