•The hygrothermal performance of aerated geopolymers depends on the Si/Al ratio.•The thermal conductivity of aerated geopolymers increases as the Si/Al ratio raises.•High moisture buffer capacity and vapor permeability are associated with a low Si/Al ratio.•The influence of efflorescence on the moisture capacity of aerated geopolymers ratio is not significant at a high Si/Al ratio.
