•A frequency response- inverse gas chromatographic (FR-IGC) method is described.•The FR-IGC method can be used to examine sorption of VOCs on building materials.•The FR-IGC method can be applied under different concentration and temperature regimes.•Different indoor materials show vastly different TCE uptakes and uptake rates.
