Calmidazolium induces a decrease in nicotine-induced currents and intracellular calcium levels after pulse application of nicotine onto insect neurosecretory cells

•Calmidazolium induces a decrease of nicotine-evoked current amplitudes.•Calmidazolium effect is associated to a strong reduction in intracellular calcium levels.•Calmidazolium and W13 activate different pathways in insect neurosecretory cells.•Calmidazolium could block an initial calcium entry from extracellular calcium.
