•Build a novel resilience indicator coupled drought intensity and recovery time.•Quantify resilience by integrating fitted curve under the same recovery time.•Ecosystem resilience to drought increased form arid to sub-humid region.•Grassland have higher resilience and lower resistance than that of forestland.•Ecosystem under higher drought frequencies tended to have greater resilience.
