Patterned graphene: Analysis of the electronic structure and electron transport by first principles computational modeling

•Electron transport calculations demonstrate similar intrinsic response for patterned graphene and graphene nanoribbons.•Device modeling with patterned graphene shows that graphene electrodes could provide minimal electrode contact resistance.•Patterned graphene offers a platform for applications with relatively small deterioration at edges of the defective region.
