•Both essential oils were able to decrease the viability of the exposed parasites.•The major compounds were effective in reducing the viability of exposed parasites.•The essential oils and their major compounds reduced parasite oviposition.•The essential oils were not toxic against L929 cells at the concentration of 50 μg/mL.
