•E-truck adoption must be coupled with investment planning for charging infrastructure.•E-trucks are already cost-attractive and a very long-range battery is not necessary.•The optimal fleet under dense demand is greener than that under sparse demand.•Cleaner energy mix results in higher e-truck adoption.•Charging infrastructure investment can be jointly made with public or private partners.
