•One-step SDBS assisted hydrothermal method was used for the preparation of BiOCl.•3D network structure promotes the exposure of BiOCl {001} facets.•More oxygen vacancies was formed on the surface of BiOCl.•Photogenerated h+ and •O2− play important roles in the degradation of OTC.
