Comparison of wheel load application methods in single-wheel testbeds

•Normal force oscillation in single-wheel testbeds adds artifacts to timeseries data.•Normal force oscillation does not significantly affect average experimental results.•Acceleration related to vertical wheel motion cannot explain normal force variation.•Normal force oscillations are mainly caused by friction in vertical sliders.•A 4-bar mechanism essentially removes normal force oscillation.
