•Furocoumarins protected terpenes from UV light induced photo-oxidation.•Furocoumarins reduced UV light induced hydroperoxide formation from R-(+)-limonene.•Full NMR data for synthesized bergaptol and bergamottin are presented.•The reaction mechanism for photo-protective effects of furocoumarins is discussed.
