Relative effect of anthropogenic warming and natural climate variability to changes in Compound drought and heatwaves

•Relative influence of large-scale teleconnections and anthropogenic warming on CDHW is explored.•At least 1–5 more CDHW events were observed during the 2000–2016 period across most climate regions.•Total fifteen out of 26 climate regions show significantly high vulnerability to CDHW events.•Significantly positive effect of anthropogenic global warming is evidenced in the top 10 most vulnerable climate regions.•Constraining to 1.5 °C global warming level is likely to result in substantial mitigation against CDHW events across these regions.
