•Poisonous weed species D. stramonium, S. nigrum and S. tuberosum are hyperspectrally separable from S. oleracea and P. vulgaris.•Regularized logistic regression is not a suitable method to select robust wavelength regions for detection of poisonous weeds in vegetable crops.•Commercial off-the-shelf filters can be used to sufficiently discriminate between D. stramonium, S. nigrum and S. tuberosum on the one hand and S. oleracea or P. vulgaris on the other.
