Predictive Value of Perioperative CA-125 and Ultrasound in Early Ovarian and Fallopian Tube Cancers

Hereditary ovarian cancer syndromes confer an elevated risk of high grade serous carcinoma (HGSC) up to 40-times population risk. Evidence based screening techniques remain elusive, but many patients are still offered CA-125 and pelvic ultrasounds for reassurance. This paper seeks to confirm that even among highest risk women, CA-125 and ultrasound are neither predictive of early serous carcinoma, nor should a negative test result be considered reassuring.
