Two-Dimensional Bimetallic Carbide Boosts Pt toward Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Up to date, the mediocre oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and durability of Ptbased catalysts are still two key challenges. In this paper, we design a catalyst by assembling Pt nanoparticles on a two-dimensional Co6Mo6C nanosheets/reduced graphene oxide hybrid (Pt/Co6Mo6C NSs-G). The ORR activity and durability of Pt/Co6Mo6C NSs-G incredibly outperform those of commercial Pt/C. The mass activity of Pt/Co6Mo6C NSs-G (957 mA mg(Pt)(-1) 0.9 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE))) is 8.5 times that of Pt/C (113 mA mg(Pt)(-1)), and the Pt/Co6Mo6C NSs-G is one of the best ORR catalysts among elemental platinum nanoparticle catalysts. The incredibly ORR performance improvement stems from the unique 2D structure of Co6Mo6C and the electron coupling interaction between Pt nanoparticles and Co6Mo6C NSs-G.
