eP277: Exploring the landscape of genetics patents in the United States from 2005 to 2020

Genetics research and innovation have historically faced many technical, legal, and ethical barriers. Although innovation within medical genetics is challenging to quantify, patent data offers a reasonable proxy, given that available diagnostic and therapeutic options generally have associated patents as protection for intellectual property. Here, we conduct an exploratory analysis of genetics-related patents in the United States granted between 2005 and 2020. By exploring the patent landscape, we aim to elucidate trends in genetic innovation that foreshadow updates to clinical practice.
