2021 Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science presented to Kunihiko Fukushima, Ph.D.

In the 21st century, deep learning has become the mainstay of artificial intelligence. Deep neural networks can learn from a limited set of samples due to the efficiency of the convolutional network architecture. Deep convolutional networks are now used for far more than the visual recognition problems attacked by Dr. Fukushima. For example, they are the basis of modern speech recognition, autonomous vehicles, and automatic language translation.
