Lanthanide Iodide Nitride Sulfide Clusters

The reaction of [(NdI) 3 N 2 ] ( I ) with Cp 3 Er in the presence of sulfur in THF gave CpNdI 2 (THF), NdI(S 2 N 2 )(THF), and an unidentified erbium compound. A similar reaction of [(DyI) 3 N 2 ] yielded CpDyI 2 (THF) and ErI(S 2 N 2 )(THF). When I reacted with ErCl 3 , the clusters [Nd 2 ErClI 4 -(S 2 )(S 2 N 2 )(THF) 7 ] and [Nd 2 ErCl 2 I 3 (S 2 )(S 2 N 2 )(THF) 7 ] were formed in 33 – 34% yield. From the mixture of reaction products of [(DyI) 3 N 2 ] with sulfur and NdI 3 , only [Nd 2 DyI 5 (S 2 )(S 2 N 2 )(THF) 7 ] was isolated in a minor yield and identified. Europium diiodide EuI 2 almost did not react with complex I and sulfur under the chosen conditions. The starting EuI 2 (50%) and previously characterized cluster [Nd 3 I 5 (S 2 )(S 2 N 2 )(THF) 9 ] were isolated from the reaction mixture.
