Over the last 20 years, continuous flow synthesis has left a distinct mark on modern synthetic chemistry where it is now commonly used in academia and industry alike. Advantages of flow processing arise from reactor miniaturization, which in turn leads to improved heat and mass transfer, while reaction containment increases process safety and facilitates scale-up and scale-out of continuous reactions. Heterocyclic synthesis remains at the forefront of industrially relevant applications of organic chemistry and as this chapter will highlight, the synthesis and functionalization of heterocyclic targets frequently benefits from continuous flow approaches. This chapter will highlight a selection of relevant case studies from the last 5 years that demonstrate the positive impact of modern flow chemistry on the field of heterocyclic chemistry.
