•ZMIC characteristics and their influence on protection under sympathetic interaction are investigated.•The reason for the slow attenuation of the ZMIC is discovered from mechanism analysis.•The cause of on-site recorded line zero-sequence protection malfunction is explained.•The zero-sequence protection of the upstream line may malfunction for sympathetic interaction.
