•Cn containing different aliphatic chain structures or ring structures were prepared.•Cn possessed good thermal properties and enantiotropic mesomorphism.•Lateral substitution in the end groups had a great influence on the ti.•The ti can be raised by increase of branch chain on six-membered ring structure.
