•Capable elderly workers tend to have positive peer effects on their colleagues.•Likely cause is the sharing of broad experience by elderly movers from other units.•Effects are heterogeneous: particularly positive for training of middle-aged peers.•Managers report negative effects of elderly workers on workplace communication.
