•Quantifying spatio-temporal variation in microclimate is crucial to managing forests.•We analyzed relationships between microclimate and stand age in Mountain Ash forest.•Young forest had hottest median day-time and lowest median night-time temperatures.•Structural differences may explain age class differences in microclimatic conditions.
