•Elastic constant is not the main factor that causes the attenuation of SAW.•Surface layer damage can cause significant attenuation of SAW.•The higher the processing accuracy, the smaller the attenuation coefficient of SAW.•Scratch can significantly change the attenuation coefficient of SAW.
