•Atriplex originated in Aralo-Caspian and the Pontic floristic region in the Oligocene.•Atriplex invaded most of the continents several times independently via long-distance dispersal.•The highest alpha diversity of Atriplex was found in Australia and the New World.•Most dispersal events took place into the Mediterranean region.
