•Two-steps single-electron transfer from H2O2 to 4-CP occurred in initial lag phase.•O2•–-generated intermediate HQ was critical to start the following rapid decay phase.•Pheonlic organics were selectively degraded by forming reductive benzenediols.•Mechanism was proposed with an effective heterogeneous-homogeneous iron cycle.
