•Ni/CGO shows a better performance compared to Ni/YSZ in terms of carbon deposition.•Carbon deposit difference between Ni/CGO and Ni/YSZ is small with this real feed.•Sulphur components in the fuel gas attack the anode materials of SOFC.•Ni/CGO is more resistant to sulphur than Ni/YSZ when steam is present.•Less carbon and sulphur deposition produced with fuel gas from CO2/H2O gasification.
