•Electroreduction of diatrizoate was performed on lead in galvanostatic mode.•Total deiodination and partial amide reduction of diatrizoate was achieved.•Improved biodegradability was highlighted by a further biological treatment.•Selective electroreduction of amido groups improves ICM biodegradability.
