•Survey (n = 352) and interviews (n = 30) with residents in new estates in Melbourne.•One-third (33%) of residents reduced their frequency of public transport use after moving.•Poorer built environment and public transport quality was found at the new estates.•Public transport use pre-move was associated with public transport use post-move.•No suitable public transport near home was associated with reduced public transport use.
