Good or bad (in)stability? A cross-cohort study of the relation between career stability and earnings mobility in Finland

•Longer cumulative spells of non-employment are associated with lower earnings growth.•Longer tenure is associated with greater earnings growth.•More frequent job changes are associated with greater earnings growth.•The returns of career stability vary by gender and education level.•Except for tenure, no large changes in these returns are observed across cohorts.
