•Phase equilibria of VCrMnFeCo HEAs were assessed.•CALPHAD and Tsai criteria are recommended for 3d transition metal HEAs.•Advantages and limitations of these predictive methods were critically discussed.•Higher fractions of V, Cr, and Mn favors BCC over sigma phase.
