Teaching IR in the Global South: views from Brazil and South Africa

This chapter focuses on the dynamics and focus of teaching international relations in the Global South. It introduces the so-called Global IR debate, and points out that IR is based on Western knowledge, but that there is growing scholarship that tries to redefine and reimage ways for a more plural IR field. The chapter discusses the challenges and possibilities faced by IR scholars teaching the Global South, presenting the cases of Brazil and South Africa as illustrations. The chapter concludes with remarks about how a pluriversal IR perspective in the classroom can also be important in other contexts.
