The AUA Symptom Index (AUASI) is the most commonly used questionnaire for men presenting to the urology clinic but notably does not assess UI. The LURN-SI-10 is a one-page assessment for patients with LUTS including an assessment of UI. The objective of this study is to determine if UI, as captured by the LURN-SI-10, is associated with quality of life (QOL) and bother. METHODS: The LURN-SI-10 and AUA-SI were prospectively administered to men with LUTS presenting to the urology clinic. UI was defined as a response of “about half the time or more” to LURN-SI-10 questions related to urge incontinence, stress incontinence and post-void dribbling. Total AUA-SI, LURN-SI-10, AUA QOL, and LURN-SI-10 bother were compared between men with and without UI using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test. The proportion of men with UI was compared between men with low or high QOL using Fischer’s exact test. RESULTS: The LURN SI-10 and AUA-SI demonstrated a large correlation (r=0.78) as did respective bother and QOL items (r=0.75). When stratified by primary diagnosis, the correlation between questionnaires was 0.76 for prostate cancer (n=115), 0.81 for benign prostatic hyperplasia (n=91), 0.75 for elevated PSA (n=34), 0.60 for overactive bladder (n=11), and 0.89 for urethral stricture (n=6), and 0.91 for other diagnoses (n=25). UI was present in 27% of the study population. Men with UI had higher (more severe) AUA-SI scores and LURN-SI-10 scores and worse AUA-SI QOL and LURN-SI-10 bother (Table). Of men with responses of mixed or worse AUA-SI QOL, 48% reported incontinence, in comparison to the 10% of men with delighted, pleased, or mostly satisfied QOL (p<0.0001; Figure). CONCLUSIONS: UI is prevalent in men presenting to the urology clinic and is associated with worse QOL and bother. The LURN-SI-10 captures a more inclusive range of LUTS than the AUA-SI, and assessment of UI should be included in routine care of men with LUTS.
