Monitoring hemorrhagic strokes using EIT

In this chapter, we discuss ongoing work on the development of an electrical impedance tomography (EIT)-based monitoring technology that is intended to be used in intensive care for bedside monitoring of stroke patients. We explain the intended clinical applications and then describe the technical progress we have this far, including a prototype stroke EIT device and an image reconstruction algorithm we have developed for monitoring hemorrhagic stroke. The performance of the proposed image reconstruction approach is demonstrated with simulated measurements of hemorrhagic stroke monitoring and experimental measurements from a laboratory setup utilizing a three-dimensional printed geometrically realistic head-shaped tank and a geometrically and electrically realistic skull. We also discuss future topics in the research.
