Sustaining Electron Transfer Pathways Extends Biohybrid Photoelectrode Stability to Years

Are photoproteins stable enough for operation in real world technologies? The Research Article (DOI: 10.1002/anie.202201148) by Vincent M. Friebe, Raoul N. Frese et al. pushes the operation of a biohybrid photoelectrode to new lengths. By stabilizing the pathways crucial for electron transfer, it was possible to prolong electrode operation to the equivalent of a full year of solar insolation in the Netherlands, as well as maintain output after storage for 2.5 years. The findings will be instrumental for realizing photoprotein based technologies such as biosensors or biophotovoltaics.
