Identification of fountain pen ink properties which determine the amount put on paper during handwriting

•Physical and chemical parameters of commercial fountain pen inks were measured.•Ink consumption (the amount laid down on paper) was quantitatively measured.•Complex statistics was conducted to identify correlations between ink properties and behaviour.•A New Ink Consumption Theory was formulated, intended to be useful for all users.
