•Study explores the severest levels of job burnout.•High burnt-out risk is significantly higher (14%) for essential workers than non-essential workers (9%).•Workers with high burnt-out risk have mental health issues at odds 10-20 times higher.•Essential workers qualitative comments provide unique insights into drivers of burnt-out risk.
