Relationship between burnout and Major Depressive Disorder in health professionals: A HEAR report

•8% eligible medical students, trainees, faculty and staff completed an online stress and depression screening questionnaire.•52% reported burnout, 45% reported depressive symptoms; 33% reported both burnout and depression.•14.6% reported thoughts of being “better off dead” or of physically harming themselves at least some of the time.•Depression had a stronger association with several indices of distress and suicide risk factors.•Results caution against overly focusing on burnout at the expense of missing an underlying depression.
