•5-ALA supplementation reduced the feed to gain of broilers during days 1–15.•5-ALA supplementation improved the antioxidative capacity of broilers.•5-ALA supplementation attenuated LPS-induced expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines.•5-ALA supplementation promoted the expression of HO-1.•5-ALA exhibited anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the TLR4/NF-κB signalling pathway.
