•Geochemical elements characteristics of 12 Chinese deserts are presented.•Precipitation and availability of fresh deposits controlled geochemistry heterogeneous.•The central deserts have a stronger genetic relationship with the western deserts.•The central and western deserts have little genetic relationship with the eastern deserts.
