34785 Epidermal reconstruction during ex vivo confocal microscopy for detection of superficial basal cell carcinoma with 3D-mosaicking and intensity projection

Background: Ex vivo confocal microscopy (EVCM) rapidly images fresh tissues to create digitally colorized H&E-images. It has a high sensitivity (79.8%-100%) and specificity (78%-100%) for the detection of residual basal cell carcinoma (BCC) during Mohs surgery. However, with current tissue mounting techniques, tissue flattening affects the visualization of the entire epidermis, impacting detection of superficial BCC (sBCC).
